Supreme Court Sets December Hearing on Arizona Voter-Registration Rules

October 4, 2026

The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments December 8 in a dispute over Arizona voter-registration rules. The case asks whether the National Voter Registration Act or a 2018 consent decree prevents Arizona from requiring documentary proof of citizenship from applicants using the state registration form, and whether federal law bars officials from removing registrations based on unverified citizenship during the 90-day quiet period before a federal election.

Positions and status: Republican officials defending the provisions say they address election security; the federal government and voting-rights groups argue the challenged requirements conflict with the NVRA. Lower courts ruled against parts of the law, while a 2024 Supreme Court order allowed some restrictions to take effect during litigation. The Court has not decided the merits.
