Two suspects arrested in stabbing of off-duty NYPD detective

Police say two men were arrested in Massachusetts on October 7 in connection with the October 2 stabbing and attempted robbery of off-duty NYPD Detective Jose Mercedes in the Bronx. Mercedes was stabbed seven times and later released from hospital. The suspects are charged with attempted murder; they are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The Department of Homeland Security described both men as Dominican nationals living in the United States illegally. That characterization is attributed to DHS.
