Germany’s AfD Gains Put Political ‘Firewall’ Under Strain

Reuters reports that Germany’s political convention against cooperation with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is facing pressure after a regional assembly vote appeared to cross party lines in support of an AfD candidate for speaker.

The report also cites a confidential assessment by Germany’s domestic intelligence agency that found the party incited resentment of migrants, racism and Islamophobia. The AfD rejects the far-right label and says it seeks to restore national pride and ensure migrants are not prioritized over German citizens.

The intelligence agency’s assessment is a reported security-agency finding, not a court ruling.
