Supreme Court Requests Response in Washington Girls’ Sports Case
October 7, 2026 — Court Watch / Education and Title IX / Breaking News.
The U.S. Supreme Court has asked the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association and other respondents to answer an emergency application filed by a Washington student identified in the docket as K.M.K. The application seeks an injunction while the case continues in the Ninth Circuit.
The applicant challenges Washington’s rules permitting transgender athletes to compete on girls’ sports teams. The filing describes an alleged assault during a wrestling match. That account is an allegation in the application; it is not a finding by the Supreme Court, and the Court has not ruled on the underlying claims.
Status: Justice Elena Kagan requested a response by 4 p.m. Eastern on October 13, 2026. The request for a response is a procedural step. The Court has not granted or denied the requested injunction and has not decided the merits.
