Judge Orders Galveston ISD to Display Ten Commandments in Classrooms

Reported October 1, 2026 | Procedural status: State-court order; separate constitutional challenges continue.

A Texas state district judge ordered Galveston Independent School District on October 1 to display donated copies of the Ten Commandments in its classrooms within 10 days. The district agreed to comply. The order followed a lawsuit by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton alleging that the district was not following the state law requiring classroom displays.

The ruling addresses the district’s compliance with Texas law. It does not resolve the separate constitutional challenges to the law, which remain in litigation.
