Suspected Boko Haram Militants Kill at Least 18 Villagers in Borno State
October 2, 2026
Suspected Boko Haram militants killed at least 18 villagers who had gone into the bush to collect firewood in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno State, according to local leaders and security sources cited by Reuters. Other villagers were reported missing, and Nigerian troops launched operations to pursue the attackers.
Boko Haram and related armed groups have carried out a long-running insurgency in northeastern Nigeria that has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions.
Important distinction: Current reporting does not identify these victims as Christians or establish that they were targeted because of religion. The attack should therefore be reported as insurgent violence, not as a proven anti-Christian attack.
