Robert P. Jones Criticizes White Christianity and Christian Nationalism

October 3, 2026

Robert P. Jones, founder and president of the Public Religion Research Institute, argued in a new interview that portions of White American Christianity have traded religious principles for political power and are helping drive what he views as an authoritarian political movement.

Jones compared the current political moment to Germany in the 1930s and argued that White Christians have a particular responsibility to oppose Christian nationalism.

Rhetoric distinction: Jones is an influential researcher on religion and politics, but his description of White Christianity as anti-democratic, his historical analogy and his interpretation of White evangelical political motives are analysis and opinion. They should not be presented as established facts about White Christians generally.
