Mississippi Redistricting Hearing Draws Racial and Political Accusations

October 2, 2026

Mississippi’s final public redistricting hearing became sharply divided as speakers debated whether new electoral maps would weaken Black political representation or provide more competitive representation.

Republican State Auditor Shad White urged lawmakers to revisit congressional maps and criticized Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson’s representation of the Mississippi Delta. Opponents accused the broader redistricting effort of threatening Black voting power, while supporters argued that districts should not be drawn around racial targets.

Rhetoric distinction: Claims that the redistricting effort is intentionally racist, as well as claims that a race-neutral approach would necessarily produce fair representation, are political arguments unless supported by evidence or established in court.
