ICE Officer Shoots Man During Bronx Arrest Attempt, Officials Say

October 9, 2026 — Current Issues / Breaking News

A federal immigration officer shot and wounded a 28-year-old man during an arrest operation in New York City’s Marble Hill neighborhood on Thursday, officials told The Associated Press. City police identified the man as Oscar Belgal, a Dominican national. He was shot in the neck and survived; a five-year-old child was in the vehicle.

The Department of Homeland Security said officers were conducting a targeted enforcement operation and that an ICE officer discharged a weapon during the incident. DHS did not publicly describe what immediately led to the shot. New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said residential security video captured some events before the gunfire but not the shooting itself. The NYPD said it was not involved.

Officials’ accounts and the available video do not establish the full sequence or resolve whether the use of force was justified. This report distinguishes confirmed details from questions that remain under investigation; protests and public criticism are reactions, not findings about the incident.
