European Parliament Seeks Scrutiny of Muslim Brotherhood Networks and EU Funding
Event date: October 8, 2026 vote | Source publications: Renew Europe and ENAR, October 8; The National, October 9 | Site publication: October 9, 2026
The European Parliament adopted a resolution seeking greater transparency over European Union funding and closer examination of alleged Muslim Brotherhood-linked networks. It asks for scrutiny of whether linked entities meet terrorist-listing criteria.
Status: A nonbinding parliamentary resolution. It does not itself designate organizations as terrorist groups, establish alleged connections or impose a new binding funding rule.
Renew Europe supported the resolution as a democratic safeguard while explicitly rejecting anti-Muslim hatred and the conflation of Islam with Islamism. The European Network Against Racism (ENAR), an organization criticized in the debate, categorically denied the alleged connections and condemned the resolution as racist and Islamophobic.
ENAR also discussed its recent loss of structural EU funding without establishing that the loss resulted from the allegations in the resolution. The National reported requesting European Commission comment; no reply appeared in the report reviewed.
The development raises questions about public funding, institutional oversight and competing discrimination claims. Allegations about particular organizations should be assessed against evidence rather than treated as proven by the vote.
