U.S. Officials Make Sweeping Statements About Islam and Sharia

Rep. Chip Roy of Texas, Rep. Randy Fine of Florida and Indiana Lt. Gov. Micah Beckwith made new public comments criticizing Islam, Sharia and what they describe as Islamic extremism.
Roy characterized Islam as a political movement that threatens Western institutions. Fine used a comparison involving reactions to the phrase “Allahu Akbar,” while Beckwith argued that critics of Sharia and Islamic extremism are too readily labeled Islamophobic.
Rhetoric distinction: These are political and religious statements by public officials. They are not evidence that Muslims as a group support extremism or that individual Muslims hold the views attributed to extremist movements.
