Pentagon Creates Office of Religious Affairs Reporting to Defense Secretary
The Associated Press reported October 2 that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is launching a Pentagon Office of Religious Affairs that will report directly to him. The Pentagon says the office will advocate for chaplains and religious support and coordinate spiritual resources, including faith-based support for military families.
The AP also reports criticism from church-state advocates who say the initiative could elevate Christianity within military policy. Hegseth says the office will not promote a particular religion or compel participation. The office’s actual policies and effects will become clearer as it operates.
